A lorry is a large vehicle designed to carry cargo.

Lorries vary greatly in size, smaller almost car like trucks up to custom built specialised cargo hauling trucks.

There are 4 main sections on any truck. This guide aims to run through briefly about each one.

Cab

The cab is where the driver is seated, it is an enclosed space. Some trucks feature a space behind the cab where the driver can rest while not driving, this is called the sleeper. 3 types of cab design exist, these are Cab Over Engine (COE), Cab Beside Engine (CBE) and Conventional cabs

Most COE trucks are found in and around Europe as the length is strictly regulated. The driver is sat in the cab above the engine.

North America has the highest concentration of conventional cabs. The driver is sat behind the engine like most car drivers.

Cab Beside Engine trucks tend to operate in specialised conditions, for example dumper trucks have CBE designs

Engine

Most lorries use four stroke diesel engines. These engines have a turbo charger and an after-cooler. Some small to medium trucks can also use petrol engines.

Drivetrain

Smaller trucks will use transmissions similar to cars and SUV's, however most large trucks will use a manual transmission without a synchroniser. This type of transmission requires the driver to double clutch when up shifting or down shifting but does save weight on overall truck design.

Frame

A lorry frame, sometimes known as a ladder frame consists of 2 parallel steal beams held together by cross members. They are almost always made of steel, although some trucks have aluminium to save weight.

ACE EManifests - An Overview

In response to the need for increased border security while not slowing down the flow of goods into the country US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have implemented a reporting regulation called ACE eManifest. Now available within the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is the ability to submit an electronic truck manifest (also known as an "emanifest") that is automated with the United States trade processing system to enhance security at the border for the trucking trade. The process involves electronically sending shipment details to the border before arrival stating important information required for clearance. This automated system sends the details for imports entering the United States before the truck arrives to allow for a fast approval upon arrival at the border. EManifest has been mandatory at all U.S. Highway crossings since 2007.

The following are some of the details required to be sent with the ACE emanifest:

- Conveyance and Equipment Details including vehicle identification number, truck and trailer license plate number (with state or province of issue)

- Driver Details including citizenship, gender, date of birth, license and passport numbers and address

- Shipment Details including shipper and consignee information, SCAC code with shipment control number, arrival date and shipment type

- Cargo Details including description, weight, country of origin, quantity, hazardous material information and bonded shipment details

- Information on any additional drivers, passengers or crew.

How is the ACE eManifest information sent?

Highway carriers have a few options for submitting electronic manifests. The US Government provides direct access via the Internet with the ACE Portal. There is no fee for the portal however the cost may be considerable as the portal is generic and somewhat cumbersome. Another option is to purchase custom software to file direct to ACE via EDI. This option may prove too expensive for most companies. The easiest way to submit an ACE emanifest is to use a third party service provider. An ACE certified provider could assist you with sending an emanifest to Customs without the hassle of learning to do it yourself. There are currently a few companies that offer an ACE emanifest service. Third party service providers can be found by doing a Google search for "emanifest service".

Companies required to participate in ACE eManifest will need a Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC). This is a unique code used to identify carriers and shipments going into the United States and is required to send emanifests. SCAC's are issued by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association.

What is a PCB?

A PCB (printed circuit board) mechanically supports electronic parts that are electrically connected with the help of conductive pathways, traces etched from copper sheets which are laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. Much of the electronic industry's assembly, PCB design and quality control needs are set by standards which are set by the IPC organization. The main generic standard for the design of a printed circuit is IPC-2221A, regardless of the material used to manufacture the board.

Circuit boards consist of an insulator which consists of one or numerous layers of material glued into a single entity. The additional layers serve as grounding to the board. The copper traces are either created by laying down individual lines mechanically or by coating the entire board in copper and stripping away the excess. In addition, PCBs are also used by students and electronic hobbyists for their custom projects and applications.

Plush toys have got to be one of the most harmless looking toys out there in the market. I mean, who would be afraid of the cute little toy? Custom stuffed toys are no exception since they usually make them with the same intention in mind - to be cute and cuddly.

So what's all the fuss about safety? A lot of people are now getting concerned about toys nowadays. Toys being recalled certainly don't help the cause. I am trying to scare you so that you'll understand the repercussions if you produce unsafe plush toys. Again, you are responsible for the safety of your custom plush toys so learn how to stand by your product.

But don't be too concerned. There is one way to make sure that everything gets done according to the CPSIA. I understand that it's hard to stand by a plush idea if you need to do things that can easily overwhelm you. All you need to do is team up with a reliable manufacturer. They understand the importance of safety and are also responsible and would gladly assume responsibility with you. But because you have a partner that understands the law and the repercussions, if you break it, you'll have a less stressful time. They'll do everything to make sure that your plush idea will turn into a reality without breaking any safety regulations. This would mean less pressure on you so you can focus on the other aspects to help you succeed.

Randall knives are well known for their fine workmanship and quality. The are now being made under the supervision of Gary Randall since 1989. The original Randall knife creator W.D. or Bo Randall died in December of 1989. The older Randall knives are worth five to fifteen times their value. They are an excellent investment. Randall knives are not mass produced. Every Randall knife is handmade with patience and care. Randall knives are used primarily by civilians but there are also knives for combat and survival knives.

Bo Randall started making his handmade knives as a hobby. He first found out about handmade knives accidentally in 1937. He saw someone using a handmade knife and was so impressed by it, that he bought it right there. It was a handmade Scagel knife. Scagel was a pioneer in making handmade knives. His knives were not well known back then, but Randall knew a distinctive look and quality when he saw it. Almost all knives were being mass produced at that time, so a handmade knife was a unique product.

From that moment on Bo Randall decided to make handmade knives that were just as good, or make the best knife he could. Before long he had a shop with a forge and spent a lot of time making knives that he would be proud of and use himself. Randall was an outdoorsman himself and so created knives that worked the way he wanted them to. They were very functional and simple in design. He started selling Randall knives through a clothing store and then to friends and sportsmen that heard of his knives.

When WWII began a sailor asked Randall to make a knife that could be used in close man to man combat. When his friends saw the Randall knife they all placed orders, then their friends and so on. A newspaper reported on the Randall knives used in combat and things went crazy. The hobby turned into a full time business. Orders were arriving addressed only to Knife Man Orlando Florida. It was tempting to go into mass produced knives with so many orders, but Randall stayed firm to his belief and made sure all Randall knives stood for quality and dependability. Especially when so many men in the war were writing him to say how the Randall knife saved their lives.
